My
approach is to take the garage package as it is, with as little
alteration as possible to the exterior. Only the height of the garage
was extended by 2'. I consider the domestic program as a "big
piece of furniture" that could be "inserted" into
the garage.
The
"piece of furniture" is a two-story high post and beam
structure that is organized in a pinwheel manner. Each wall/beam
of the pinwheel structure is extended on one end, dividing the interior
into four quadrants plus the central area on the two levels. Sleeping
area is located on the second floor, and the living area is sunken
right underneath it. The remaining four quadrants are used as a
porch, study, kitchen and bathroom.
The
post and beam structure is chosen for a couple of reasons. First,
the given exterior is a framed structure, which forms a shell around
the house. The post and beam interior structure is self-supporting,
and it can be seen as an independent object that is inserted into
the shell of the house. This type of structure would also allow
a greater openness in the different areas divided by the partition
in the interior.
